Are the Olympics responsible for the great power of the Greek army?
this is my topic for my essay. i need some help for the research part i can’t really find that much information. what i need is not the answer, is just a site for the details. can someone help me?
First of all, there was no “Greek Army.” There were city-states in the ancient Greek world that each fielded their own armies, and frequently fought with each other: Athens and Sparta, for example; Thebes, Syracuse, Corinth, and many other city-states. It’s a convention to refer to “Greece” and the “Greek world,” but there was no united entity that could be called “Greece” and hence no “Greek Army.” There were armies of Athens, Sparta, Syracuse, Thebes, and Corinth, among others, but no “Greek army,” at least not until Alexander the Great became hegemon of the Greek states.
Also, the Olympics were a religious festival and it was sacrilege, punishable by death, for either athletes or people on the consecrated grounds where the contests were held, to commit an act of violence. There was a truce in force at the site of the Olympics between warring city-states for the duration of the Games. The Games had their basis in the training that a free citizen of the Greek world undertook as part of his preparations to undertake military duty required of a citizen, but the Games themselves were conducted as a religious festival.

For additional reading, if you’re interested, the fiction of Mary Renault makes a good start in giving a feel for the history of the Greek world in ancient times. Her books “The Praise Singer,” “The Last of the Wine,” and “The Mask of Apollo” cover the period from archaic times to just before the rise of Philip II and Alexander the Great in Macedon; “The Fire From Heaven” and “The Persian Boy” cover the era of Alexander the Great; and “Funeral Games” covers the break-up of Alexander’s empire after his death.
