Arts Shoes
Why bow in the martial arts?

Simple question. I know it's something to do with respect. But I just started martial arts and I realized the right of the bat my master and his assistant would tilt before entering the door. They also remove their shoes, respectively. I had to ask why did these things. Although I want to be as respectful to the art and the people in my class. Can you help me or point me to some great websites to cover the basics?

Very good question and one that is very misunderstood. First the easy part, bowing in the dojo / Dojang. Removing shoes was out in Japan, primarily due to the fact that they used tatami mats woven grasses. Shoes caused a lot of wear on the pads and brought upon the earth. So take the shoes was to protect the mats and maintain cleaner floors. Also many of the old traditional techniques involve kicking foot parts that are difficult to use when wearing shoes. Toe kicks are an example of these. As for the inclination, which is an often misunderstood. practice. Many, including teachers, do not understand the concept of reverence. It's about respect, but is more complicated than that. When entering or leaving the dojo, is a sign of respect to lean towards the front of the dojo. Often dojo take photos of the founder of the style or other famous students of the founder. The image instructors may be there too. Leaving is own bow in front again by the same reason. NOTE: I was recently visiting a Korean TKD school in Virginia. To my surprise, the students would face the front of the arc entering the dojang. Without But I am totally surprised when everyone had their backs to the front of the dojang when they bowed out of the mat. That is totally wrong. When entering stop one must bow to the front of the dojo / training area. The arch of the instructor is also misunderstood. Some people have the idea that they must bow to the instructor, because he is in charge or if there will be mad. That's the wrong way to view the subject. The arc that the instructor must be one of respect. Respect is for his many years of training, and the fact that he is willing to share their knowledge. There is supposed to be one of the instructors are superior to students. It is not intended to prove that a person is better another. The instructor bows to the students, out of respect too. A good teacher remembers how hard it was to learn and to get where he is now. He leans out of respect the student to take the road and often confusing many insights and skills of self-defense. The arch and arch depth is another area in which many have the wrong idea. We are often taught here incorrectly. Many teach that the student s to bow deeply. The idea is that the deeper the bow of the most respectful is. While to some extent is not part of the martial arts arc in many cases. Traditionally, when two Japanese gathered in the street, would do this. More profound is the most respectful bow. In the martial arts foot arches are carried out by bending over. The head and torso flex. The arch is just deep enough so that it can no longer see the eyes of others. To maintain eye contact to show distrust. Now I know that many martial arts students have said they must be kept eye contact when they lean. This is one of the greatest concepts evil in general. They have confused the fight against them with respect. You will never be inclined to an enemy so keep your eyes on the other person is not a problem. You should only bow before someone I respect. So when bowing to them, they must maintain eye contact. NOTE: the bow as I said only deep enough that he can not see the eyes of others. Traditional this has another purpose. Leaning you are exposing the top of your head. The top of the head is considered a vulnerability. So again only expose a person I respect. Hope this helps!
