How to identify and select one of Lean Six Sigma Black Belt
Black Belts are knowledgeable and highly trained in the use of methodologies Lean Six Sigma tools and facilitation and change management, and leading experts in the field to increase levels of customer satisfaction and productivity business.
Black Belts have typically completed four weeks or 160 hours of Lean Six Sigma training and have demonstrated mastery of the material by making the project (s) (usually a minimum of two projects) and test (usually a 80% pass). Coach Black Belts Green Belts and receive guidance and support Master Black Belt. It is widely expected to move a Black Belt Master Black Belt in a significant business or function after allocation Black Belt has been completed in 18 months to three years.
Six Sigma Black Belt Qualities
What should you look for in your Black Belt? Here's my personal top ten list. Note that the bulleted list instead of numbering. This was done on purpose, as a numbered list usually indicates that a point might be more valuable than another. In this case, all ten qualities are considered essential and must have the same weight.
Customer Advocacy – Black Belts should communicate immediately with the understanding that customers are always the recipients of processes, and customers (internal or external) are always the final judge of product or quality of service. Understanding customer needs is key to process improvement. Therefore, a Black Belt candidate must speak clearly about how to delete process variation is a key to business improvement.
Passion – No fish cold very well received in Lean Six Sigma. Black Belts must be self-motivated, have initiative and have a positive personality. They may be expected to be a cheerleader, to pick the team and help them move forward productively. Passion also gives strength to persevere, even when things can get rough in a project.
Change Leadership – Black belts have proven agent behavior change in the past, regardless of the rights of their work. During the interview, ask them how they challenged the status quo in his latest role. No? … Well, maybe that is not the right person for Black Belt position. Organizational change and how it is done can affect employees. Change agents and leaders change have a way of positive change, while generating support for change.
Communication – Black Belts are effective communicators, which is essential for the many roles they serve (trainers, coaches and mentors). Black Belts should be able to speak understandably everybody (employees plant to executive management.) Understanding the various needs of audience members and tailor the message to the address of your concerns is the mark of a communicator effective. Once a Black Belt has these qualities, creating slide Power Point presentation (a requirement in corporate America, right?) It is very easy.
Business Insight – Black Belts are business leaders, not the quality managers of the past. As such, they must have business knowledge and the ability to show the linkage between projects and desired business results. How is a project the company more competitive and economically strong? You may ask questions during the interview to determine if the Black Belt candidates have made in this regard in their previous roles.
Project Management – Lean Six Sigma is a project carried out at a time. We must not lose sight of the fact that the Black Belt must manage projects from scope, requirements, resources, deadlines, and the prospects of the variance. Knowledge of the fundamentals of project management and project management experience are essential.
Technical Fitness – Black Belt candidate need not be a graduate in engineering or statistical, but in some cases this is beneficial – provided that the qualities of other top ten are also present. In all cases, a Black Belt has the obligation to collect and analyze data to determine a strategy for improvement. Without some technical aptitude (computer and software literacy and analytical skills) the Black Belt will be frustrated in this role.
Player team leader – Black Belt must possess the ability to lead, work with teams, be part of a team and understand team dynamics (that is, assault, standardize, making). To effectively lead a team, a Black Belt should be nice, getting along with people, have good skills to influence and motivate others.
Results Oriented – Black Belts are expected to perform and produce tangible results for the financial business. They should be working hard and fast to demonstrate success.
Fun – Black Belts should enjoy their jobs if they are passionate about. By having fun, encourage others to do the same.
Qualities that made the Top Ten (but important)
Trust and Integrity – These are the requirements and are not negotiable.
Deep Knowledge Process – Lean Six Sigma is to have a team of experts working to eliminate defects and improve a process. Obviously, someone in the computer must have a thorough knowledge of process under investigation. This need not be the Black Belt, but it can be.
Been There – Done that – Sometimes a team will give credibility to a Black Belt who has "been through it." When the team is being formed, this can help speed acceptance Black Belt, but is not a requirement.
Know Lean, Six Sigma, ISO, TQM, etc. – Remember, you are building your business a leadership pipeline Black Belt at a time. Having a specific knowledge detailed Lean Six Sigma is not a prerequisite – that will go through training, have the list of ten qualities of a Black Belt (which are listed above) is.
Diverse Experience – In this way, the Black Belt to appreciate more than one aspect of a process improvement project. For example, if a belt Black has just emerged from a graduate program in statistics, he or she is likely to predominantly use newly acquired skills and tools. Black Belts with a background you can see various projects and issues integral.
A Grade – While a level compatible with the idea that a person has developed thinking skills independent, not having a degree does not mean the Black Belt candidate has no independent thinking skills. This quality is highly questionable, as I have seen excellent Belts Black with and without titles.
If you are hiring a Black Belt in front of the selection and development in the inside, I would suggest the following attributes are most critical in selecting the right candidate.
Facilitation Team – Building a successful team and consistent with the development tools, resources, training, objectives, performance measures and a flexible interpersonal style. Ability to effectively facilitate the implementation of team goals.
Troubleshooting – Identify existing and potential problem situations and their causes. Research at a level that reveals the full impact of the situation. Identify trends and patterns and develop measures to solve or prevent the onset of recurrence.
Process Orientation – Ability to understand customer needs, define and understand the processes, and their effectiveness, efficiency and adaptability. Black Belts have the ability to take a systematic view of the activities from a broad perspective. Expert analysis processes and establish a vision for optimization.
Facilitating Change – Encouraging people to seek opportunities for different and innovative approaches addressing problems and opportunities. To facilitate the implementation and acceptance of change within the workplace.
Communication Skills – Transmits or absorb information and ideas through various media to individuals or groups in a way that engages an audience and helps them understand and retain the message.
Computer Skills – Understand and use basic office tools available on a personal computer. Can do basic word process, spreadsheet, e-mails, presentations and web browsing.
Program and Project Management – Identify customers, results, project scope, plan and resources. Black Belts are experts in removing obstacles while making decisions that keep the team focused on meeting quality, cost and time goals.
Analyze the costs and ROI – Use of cost analysis methods and procedures for determining the allocation of resources and evaluate alternatives in the shop and offices. Black Belts use established principles and practices, collect data, interpret information, and explain the floating elements and risks of investment.
